Who qualifies for an apartment at St. John’s Centre?

St. John’s Centre is a retirement home for senior citizens ages 65 years and older. You must be capable of independent living with the help of support services. You must be a Canadian Citizen, a Permanent Resident or have Refugee status. You cannot be under a deportation, departure or exclusion order. You cannot owe money to a social housing provider. However, you can be in the process of repaying a social housing provider. 

Is St. John’s Centre a nursing home or a retirement home?

Considered a retirement home, St. John’s Centre is a unique apartment building for independent seniors. Living accommodations consist of private apartments. There is no nursing station nor do we monitor tenant activity.

How do I apply for an apartment at St. John’s Centre?

You must complete an application forms in order to be considered for an apartment. This process will include a personal tour allowing us an opportunity to get to know one another and determine if the Centre is a good fit for your needs. You will need to reserve a time for your tour by calling the office.

Does St. John’s Centre have a Wait list?

Yes. There is a Rent-Geared–to-Income wait list which is mandated by the City of Peterborough and is filled in chronological order or on a first come first serve basis.  The Market Rent wait list is not mandated. Wait times vary according to the accommodation requirements. Special priority is given to victims of violence and abuse. 

Do you have nursing staff on site?

No. Nursing services can be obtained from the Local Health Integrated Network (LHIN). A referral from your family physician is required for a nursing or any other professional visit. All physicians are familiar with this process and can assist you immediately. 

Who will help me with my medications?

The Personal Support Workers (PSWs) can assist you with your medications by way of reminders and presenting them to you. Blister packaging is recommended.  Needs are assessed on an individual basis.

Who provides Personal Care and Homemaking Services?

Personal Support Workers (PSWs) provide personal care and homemaking services to tenants on a scheduled basis. PSWs are on site 24/7 and also provide emergency response.

What is a Personal Support Worker (PSW)?

Personal Support Workers (PSWs) are qualified care givers. They provide service to individuals who need assistance with activities of daily living to help them to remain independent.

Is there a fee for support services?

No. The support services are funded by the Local Health Integrated Network (LHIN) and provided free of charge to the tenants of the Center.

Who determines my needs for support services?

The Supportive Housing Director will meet with you and together you will develop a schedule of services  to address your care needs and ensure your safety and independence.

Is St. John's Center pet friendly?

Yes. Tenants are permitted one pet per unit. A pet policy must be signed prior to having your pet live here. The policy will indicate the does and don'ts, pet sized, pet restrictions, etc. There are no restrictions for service animals.

Are there social activities at St. John's Center?

St. John’s Centre celebrates all major holidays. The decorations are plentiful and put everyone in the spirit of the holiday. There is also a tenant BBQ and corn roast on the back patio during the summer months. A furnished common room for group or individual activities includes a TV, keyboard, karaoke machine and a selection of puzzles and various board games. The Tenant Association organizes weekly bingo and a variety of great tenant activities.   As well, St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church, (via the LINK) invites all tenants to attend their year-round activities. We welcome any suggestions you may have.

Do you have to have any religious affiliations to live at St. John’s Centre?

No. St. John’s Centre is non-denominational and welcomes everyone.
